Mpanga Forest

Mpigi District is part of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area experiencing population and human development pressure yet it hosts the only natural resources in the GKMA as explained below:

Mpanga Forest:  Mpanga Forest, located in Mpigi District, Uganda, spans approximately 453 hectares (4.53 square kilometers). This compact equatorial rainforest is a significant ecological and cultural site, known for its rich biodiversity and historical importance. The forest is situated about 37 kilometers southwest of Kampala and is easily accessible, making it a popular destination for ecotourism and scientific research.

Mpanga Forest Reserve is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including over 500 species of trees and shrubs, 300 species of birds, and numerous species of butterflies, monkeys, and other wildlife. It also plays a crucial role in local cultural practices, with surrounding communities engaged in traditional activities such as drum-making.

Increasing Population Pressure: GKMA including Mpigi is experiencing significant population growth, which intensifies the demand for resilient peri/urban biodiversity solutions. Establishing the SDG Village here allows for direct engagement with communities facing these challenges, fostering innovative and practical approaches to sustainability.

Human Development Pressure: The district is undergoing notable infrastructure developments, such as the Mpigi Express Southern Bypass. This presents both challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. The SDG Village can leverage these developments to promote sustainable urban planning and environmental management.
